Psychology Department TA Positions

The Fall/Winter teaching assistantship application form can be found on our forms webpage: http://www.queensu.ca/psychology/graduate/current-students/forms-policies

DUE DATE to submit this form to the graduate office is MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016.

Attached is a list of the 2016-17 undergraduate and graduate courses offered that will need teaching assistance next year.

You can cross-reference the courses with the undergraduate calendar for course descriptions on the undergraduate website at: http://www.queensu.ca/psychology/undergraduate/current-students/course-information  and timetable details.

Teaching Assistantships form part of the guaranteed minimum funding package for full-time graduate students in the Department (MSc 1, 2, PhD 1, 2, 3, 4).  A graduate student may decline the offer of a teaching assistantship, in which case their funding package will be reduced accordingly. Please be aware that teaching assistants must be geographically located in Kingston, Ontario.

If you wish to be considered, please complete the application and return it to the Graduate Office (H227) by July 4, 2016 at noon.

Stipend rates for 2016-17 are currently as follows:

MARKING            -              $8,176.48 for 8 hr/wk for 26 weeks (208 hours)

TUTORING          -              $10,220.60 for 10 hr/wk for 26 weeks (260 hours)

Generally, the priority sequence below is followed in assigning teaching assistants. Please be aware, however, that the primary purpose of funds for teaching assistantships is for the support of undergraduate teaching.  Consequently, academic requirements of the courses for which teaching assistantships exist will, if necessary, take precedence over this priority system. In addition, ensuring that guaranteed minimum funding packages for full-time graduate students in the Department will, if necessary, also take precedence over this priority system.

FIRST PRIORITY - New Incoming students in MSc 1 and PhD 1

SECOND PRIORITY - Continuing students in MSc 2 or PhD 1, 2, 3 or 4 without major external awards (may have QGF or QGA)

THIRD PRIORITY -  Continuing students in MSc 2 or PhD 1, 2, 3 or 4 who hold major awards

FOURTH PRIORITY - Continuing students in PhD 5 and above or MSc 3

FIFTH PRIORITY - Students admitted with a statement indicating that no departmental funding could be counted upon.

We will attempt to offer (as we have done in the past) a teaching assistantship to all graduate students who wish to have one.

If you only want to do one (0.5) TAship your stipend would be half of the amount listed above.
Choosing only half a TAship will reduce your minimum guaranteed amount accordingly.

If your TAship is in one term (four month period - either the fall or the winter) your stipend will be paid over the four month period either (fall: Sept to Dec) or (winter: Jan to Apr). If your TAship is in the fall and winter terms your TAship will be paid over an eight month period (fall/winter: Sep to Apr).

Duties of a TAship will vary from course to course but may include the following non-exhaustive list: Contact with Students (e.g., leading labs or tutorials, office hours, answering email, monitoring websites); Contact with Instructor; Proctoring; Marking; etc.
