Title: "Does working memory exist? Re-evaluating the taxonomy of cognition"
Neuroscientists often use a common vocabulary when discussing human cognitive abilities- such “attention” or “working memory”- without considering the implicit models that these phrases carry with them. This taxonomy of cognition is inherited from classic psychological definitions of putative functions, and I will argue that it is often misleading. Taking working memory as an example, I will present a few cases where traditional thinking has created false theoretical dichotomies and minimized crosstalk between overlapping fields of study. Finally, I will highlight a few potential solutions.
